The Birth of a New Sportswear Brand
STOSS
When Sportsqvest, a leading B2B sportswear manufacturer decided to foray into the consumer market, it would not be a straightforward brand extension or expansion. It would be the beginning of something entirely new.
Sportsqvest had carved out a stronghold in the business-to-business (B2B) space, proving their technical expertise in outfitting teams, leagues, and institutions in domestic and international markets. Orienting the brand to the business to consumer (B2C) world, speaking directly to athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and everyday movers would take a different kind of presence, and a different kind of brand.
Turntable was brought onboard to shape a new way forward. Before brand construction, we had to create a business model that could straddle both worlds – B2B and B2C, teamwear and individual performance, manufacturing strength and retail aspiration. In a category as crowded and competitive as sportswear, we would have to be methodical and build deliberately every step of the way.
From Strength to Strategy
Every brand needs a clear differentiator.
For STOSS it would be Sportsqvest’s deep-rooted expertise in high-quality, fully customizable teamwear.
But to carve out a space in the consumer market, we had to dig deeper. We started by studying Sportsqvest’s operational strengths – in-house production, technical fabrics, the ability to customize at scale and a comprehensive understanding of athletes’ and teams’ practical needs. Then we mapped it against the market: the flood of fitness and athleisure brands, the gaps between quality and price, a desire for personalization and for gear that works for both professional and daily athletic pursuits. The path forward became clearer. Yet another activewear label was not the road to go down on.
Rather, we would build a brand that honored the team spirit Sportsqvest was known for but also spoke to the personal ambitions of today’s athletes and individuals who care about fitness; one that combined the durability of professional kits with the sensibility of premium athleticwear.
STOSS would be a destination for people who take their pursuit seriously — whether that pursuit was a championship title, a personal best, or simply the next better version of themselves.
In a market this dense, names tend to collapse into each other and everyone sounds a little like everyone else.
We knew a conventional name wouldn’t work. There are multiple naming strategies one could use – descriptive names, clever mashups, geographical references, founder-based names, evocative terms but all of these routes felt crowded, overused, exhausted. The main challenge was to come up with a name that could secure a trademark, a clean domain and root itself in people’s minds after they heard it. Inventing one was the only way to go.
The name had to somehow capture the spirit of athletic pursuit – have energy, tension, precision. It needed to sound sharp and feel dynamic. It needed to look strong and move easily across all marketing collaterals.
After dozens of iterations and testing out multiple names, we landed on STOSS.
Short. Punchy. Visually appealing. The repetition of the “S“ gave it a sense of propulsion.
Aurally, the word had a precise, commanding quality – the hard “T“ balanced by the flowing ‘S’. Just the act of saying the word mimicked the energy of movement – gathering force with ‘ST’ and pushing outward with ‘OSS’. Even the curve of the “S“ mirrored the coil of a runner at the start line — focused, braced, ready to launch.
It didn’t just name the brand. It captured the feeling of movement we were trying to build.
As we shaped the strategic foundations of STOSS, one idea kept surfacing.
The work. The work athletes put in everyday, not winning, not the medals but the work.
The hours put in when nobody’s watching, waking up while the world is still dark, practicing late through the evenings, the quiet discipline required for the relentless pursuit.
This worldview and practice was the core of the brand’s ethos – The Pursuit of Greatness. Yes, it would be the brand’s motto and tagline. More importantly, it would be the emotional engine powering STOSS. It would speak to athletes pushing their limits daily, their persistence mirroring the brand’s qualities – attention to detail, sharper cuts, smarter fabrics, products conceived for athletes’ pain points.
This ethos would thread through every layer of communication, from product storytelling to B2B outreach, reinforcing a brand that honors the journey, not just the destination.
Crafting the Voice:
Positioning for B2B and B2C Audiences
STOSS needed to live in two worlds and sound right in both. It had to speak to teams and leagues on the one hand, and individual athletes and fitness enthusiasts on the other. Each audience had different needs but both would be drawn to STOSS for gear that helped them perform best.
For B2B audiences the voice focused on partnership and professionalism. We positioned STOSS as a collaborator, not just a supplier: offering fully customizable kits made with speed, precision, and technical excellence.
For B2C audiences, the tone shifted slightly. It became more personal and aspirational speaking directly to the athlete’s inner drive. Communication centered on how premium performance wear would support the chase to be better than yesterday.
Shared themes like dedication, performance, and customization tied the two audiences together under a single brand philosophy — but the tone and emphasis subtly shifted depending on who STOSS was speaking to.
Building the Brand’s
Verbal and Visual Identity
Once the name STOSS was locked in, we started building a complete identity around it — one that moved and breathed like an athlete.
The verbal identity leaned on clarity, energy, and discipline. Here, you would not find inflated claims and complex copy but clean, powerful language that recognized the work behind the win. The tone of voice we developed was grounded in the reality of the athlete’s journey without being preachy or cold or aggressive.
Visually, the brandmark drew from the tension and grace of athletic movement – the stillness before a sprint, the arc of a stretched body and the moment of release, the last and final push to stride over the finish line. Typography choices emphasized strength and stability while graphics carried a subtle, kinetic energy, a forward flow.
The result: a brand that didn’t just talk about pursuit. It moved like it.
The Pursuit Ahead
With its foundations in place – a distinct name, a grounded ethos, an authentic voice, and a clear business model designed for growth, STOSS was ready to move into the market.
Instead of chasing trends and trying to be everything to everyone, STOSS would remain:
– Rooted in real capability drawing upon Sportsqvest’s in-house production capacity.
– Meaningfully differentiated emphasizing personalization and premium garments as core promises.
– Driven by a clear ethos where greatness is understood as a practice and not a moment in time.
